1. What should I expect from a pediatric visit?

   We’ve built a positive and collaborative wellness home for you and your family. When you walk into our office, you’ll be greeted by one of our friendly team members, who can help you coordinate your family’s healthcare, including in-office visits, camp or school physicals, and specialist referrals. You’ll spend your entire visit with a board-certified pediatrician, or a family provider who can care for your entire family.

   Our providers are eager to build strong and lasting relationships with their patients. They want you to feel comfortable sharing your parenting experiences during visits, emailing them questions, and calling our practice for questions about something as sudden as a fever or as routine as a well-child visit.

2. What’s the difference between family and adult offices?

   One Medical has two different office types:

   Adult offices have providers and staff ready to care for patients 14+.

   Family offices have pediatricians and specially trained teams who can see patients of all ages, in addition to having pediatric medical equipment and pediatric vaccines. Family offices often have extra amenities in the lobby, such as children’s books, toys, and stroller parking. There are also private Nurture Rooms for feeding newborns and infants.

3. Where can children under 14 get lab work done?

   Kids can get their labs done at our Family offices. The labs in these locations have the special pediatric inventory and specifically trained pediatric lab specialists needed to care for your child.

4. What lab services are available to children under 14 at Family Practice Offices?

   Blood draw, point of care testing (lead and hemoglobin), vaccines, hearing and vision screening, stool and urine testing, breathing treatments via nebulizer/metered-dose inhaler, ear lavage, EKG and PPD placement/reading.

5. What’s the difference between a pediatrician and a family medicine provider?

   A pediatrician sees patients up to age 21 years old. Pediatricians complete four years of medical school followed by a 3-year residency in pediatrics. They’re specialists in child medicine, so the scope of their practice is focused on care of children. Pediatricians emphasize preventive care and monitoring of growth and development for children through age 21 years. They diagnose, manage, and treat many common conditions affecting all organ systems as well as mental health.

   A family medicine provider sees all ages. Family medicine doctors complete a 3-year residency in family medicine after graduating from medical school. Family medicine doctors, physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (FNPs) are all trained to offer primary care services for patients of all ages, including preventive care, the management of acute and chronic illnesses, and mental health.

7. Do you host meet & greets with One Medical pediatricians?

   All family practice offices offer complimentary meet & greets so families can interview a provider to see if they're the right fit for them.

   To set up an appointment, follow the instructions below:

   If the parent or guardian is a One Medical member:

   You can book a remote meeting done over video through the app or website. Look for the pediatric meet and greet appointment in the booking options.

   If the parent or guardian is not currently a One Medical member:

   Sign up for a complimentary One Medical temporary membership using the free trial code NEWFAMILY30 (NEWFAMILY15 if you’re in the Washington D.C. area). This allows you to use the One Medical app or website to send a message including the information below to the admin team through the parent or guardian's account. Our team will then help you set up time with a pediatric provider near you — at no cost.

9. Can my child see the same provider as me?

   Many people like the convenience and holistic healthcare experience of having one provider for everyone in the family. Seeing the whole family gives a provider greater insight into the family’s health history, lifestyle, and values that inform their care. Because family providers have expertise in treating people of all ages, your child can continue seeing them as an adult. Other people prefer having a pediatrician who specializes just in caring for children. It’s really a matter of your personal preference. We’re confident that your kid will get exceptional care whatever you choose.

10. Do you offer parenting classes?

    Yes! We offer a variety of complimentary parenting classes where our pediatricians and family medicine providers cover topics like "How to's" of newborn care, lactation, and more. These classes are available to all at no cost — even if you’re not a One Medical member. Learn more and sign up for classes.

11. What additional support do you have for new parents?

    Complimentary parenting classes

    Our amazing pediatricians host several complimentary online courses to support new parents, including the “how to’s” for newborn care, introducing solid foods in infancy, and newborn chestfeeding. Sign up for one of our parenting classes and feel free to bring a friend —they’re open to everyone.

    Lactation consultations

    In addition to traditional pediatric care and 24/7 virtual care, we also offer chestfeeding and lactation support to make life simpler for busy, tired parents in San Francisco, Orange County, and Phoenix. Our staff lactation consultants are available for 60-minute in-person lactation consulting sessions to help with a range of feeding issues, including breastfeeding, breast pumping, bottle feeding, and weaning. Families love their personalized approach, and the appointments are typically billed through insurance.

    Members can schedule lactation consulting appointments through our app or member website.

12. How do I register my baby for pediatric care with One Medical before they’re born?

    Just sign them up here. We'll collect whatever information you have. Don't worry if your baby doesn't have a name yet — we'll update the chart with any new information after they’re born.

    Within a day after your baby is born, schedule their first appointment in the app. The first well visit with your baby’s provider is typically scheduled for one to three days after your baby leaves the hospital. Remember to budget extra time to get out of the house with a newborn, and please bring any records and hospital discharge information.

13. Who can bring my child to their appointments?

    We recommend that a parent or legal guardian is present at all well-child visits to discuss their child’s health history as well as any concerns and recommendations the provider may have. As your child reaches adolescence, they’ll have time alone with their provider to discuss sensitive topics.

    If an adult other than a parent or legal guardian will be bringing your kid to their appointment, you will need to complete an authorization form.

    If your kid is 12 years or older, you will need to complete a consent form allowing them to attend visits without an adult present. Please note that state regulations allow adolescents to seek care without parental consent for certain medical issues.

14. What is One Medical’s stance on vaccines?

    We strongly support and follow the routine childhood vaccination schedule put forth by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). It is our professional opinion that immunizing your child fully and on schedule is important in keeping your child healthy and preventing devastating diseases. We welcome questions about immunization to help parents navigate any confusion around vaccines.

15. Is One Medical testing kids for COVID-19? Where can I find more resources about COVID-19?

    Keeping your kids healthy is a regular daily challenge — even without a pandemic. As local and state health authorities continue to issue new guidance about COVID-19 each day, you may be more worried about your kid’s health than usual. One Medical is here to help your family navigate the evolving situation with:
    

    Testing

    We test kids 14 and younger at all offices in locations where we offer pediatric services. Children over 14 can be tested at any One Medical location in all markets. All testing is by appointment.
    

    Advice and care

    If you have questions about your child’s symptoms, or they need to be examined, we suggest booking a COVID-19 Symptom Consult & Testing visit or a Sick Visit.
    

    COVID-19 testing appointments are for testing only, while COVID-19 Symptom Consult and Testing visits and Sick Visits include time to discuss symptoms, get your kid examined, and ask questions. Please note that if multiple kids are being tested, each one needs their own appointment, which can be booked with the One Medical app.
