Maria Morton, PA-C | Physician Assistant & Lactation Counselor | SanTan Village in Gilbert, Arizona

What is your training background as a Lactation Consultant?

I am certified in Lactation Counseling through the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice. I am also a Physician Assistant and have worked with newborns and pediatric patients since graduating from medical school in 2010. This means that in addition to counseling, I am also able to prescribe medications if needed for breastfeeding-related problems.

Why did you choose your specialty?

I chose to become a Lactation Counselor after breastfeeding my son. I realized that many women either did not know where to turn with questions about breastfeeding or were being given insufficient or misleading advice. Breastfeeding creates a special bond between mom and baby and has so many positive health benefits, so I wanted to help support women in achieving their goals for nursing.

What can you do within the scope of pediatric care?

I am able to provide breastfeeding counseling and answer questions for pregnant and breastfeeding women and their family members. I am also able to help evaluate and help moms with breastfeeding problems such as a difficult latch, low milk supply, or pain with breastfeeding.

What is your favorite children’s book?

Definitely If You Give A Mouse A Cookie! It teaches kids cause-and-effect in an easy-to-understand and fun way. Now that I’m a parent, I realize the time-saving value of thinking few steps ahead. A cookie is never just a cookie!
