Sarit Shtivelman, MD | Pediatrician | Oakland in the SF Bay Area
What is your training background as a pediatrician?
I went to medical school at New York University, and completed my residency training in Pediatrics at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. I have worked in general outpatient pediatrics since 2012.
Why did you choose your specialty?
I have always been fascinated by the way tiny newborns grow into young adults — the brain development, the cognitive growth, and the physical changes are pretty miraculous when you think about it! The way that a child’s environment, physical health, and individual personality affect this growth is what I’m interested in, and why I love pediatrics.
What can you do within the scope of pediatric care?
Preventative care and monitoring of growth and development is the cornerstone of every wellness visit for newborns through age 18 years. I diagnose, manage and treat many common conditions affecting all organ systems, and I work with specialists to care for children with more complex needs or medical problems. I can also diagnose and manage psychiatric problems, including Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, depression, and anxiety.
What is your favorite children’s book?
All of the Frog and Toad stories by Arnold Lobel. I was born in Israel, and our family read the books in Hebrew. We moved to the U.S. when I was young, and I still remember being so excited when I found out that children in the U.S. also read Frog and Toad – it was comforting!
