A simpler solution for optimizing employee health and satisfaction

A practical solution for HR and Benefits Leaders
Employee health and productivity is always a priority. But building and maintaining benefits packages that lead to healthier, happier workplaces isn’t easy. HR and Benefits Leaders juggle a long list of priorities every day, many of which seem to operate in conflict. In 2024, Arizent (EBN) surveyed 100 HR and executive leadership professionals at companies with at least 250 benefits-eligible employees and found more than 75% of respondents identified these as their top six priorities:
- Improving employee awareness/understanding of benefits
- Employee retention
- Improving employee health and well-being
- Reducing company’s healthcare costs
- Improving employee satisfaction
- Increasing employee productivity
This is truly just the beginning of the many priorities identified in the survey. Addressing so many areas at the same time is already challenging, and doing so while staying on budget is even harder. Often, HR professionals wind up feeling they can’t afford to provide the kind of benefit packages that would improve employees’ lives and improve productivity. One HR professional described feeling like they’re “struggling between wanting to offer the best quality benefits to our employees and staff but at prices that don’t break the bank for them, or us.”
The research pointed to one solution that could address these challenges head-on: direct primary care (DPC).
An opportunity to ease HR challenges
When Arizent conducted their survey, the results suggested DPC programs are capable of addressing a wide range of HR priorities. The catch? Many people haven’t used DPC before. Nearly seven in 10 respondents (68%) said they’re familiar with the basic concept of DPC, but only 17% have direct experience with the benefit. As HR departments balance the cost and effectiveness of their offering, DPC offers untapped potential.
Flexible, accessible benefits at a reasonable, more predictable cost
With DPC, patients receive greater access to personal physicians, extended office visits and highly personalized, coordinated, comprehensive care management for a flat monthly or annual fee. Mark Tomasulo, DO, Head of Direct Primary Care Strategy and Innovation at One Medical, described it like this: “By disconnecting patient visits from revenue, physicians can see a more manageable number of patients each day, which means patients get better access to care without surprise costs.”
Keeping costs down and morale high
Respondents who have used DPC overwhelmingly agree that it reduces costs for employees and businesses while improving employee productivity. In the Arizent survey, businesses saw an 82% improvement in employee satisfaction and morale and a 77% improvement in productivity. As Dr. Tomasulo said, “There are thousands of practices and tens of thousands of employees getting easier access to primary care for less than the monthly cost of a cell phone bill.”
