Adrienne Kassis, MD | Family Medicine Physician | San Rafael in the SF Bay Area
What is your training background as a Family Medicine physician?
I obtained my undergraduate degree at UCLA in Physiology. After college, I attended medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and then completed a three-year residency in Family Medicine at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. Family Medicine training includes prenatal care and delivering babies, care of newborns through childhood, adult medicine, and geriatric care.
Why did you choose your specialty?
I love being able to take care of the whole family, and to be able to provide a broad spectrum of services to my patients. I can provide care for most of the needs of my patients — from newborns to great-grandparents — through all of their major life events. When I’m caring for kids, getting to know the family well helps me provide better care for my pediatric patients. Observing the family dynamics over time gives me unique insight into their lives.
It’s very fun and rewarding. To me, there is no greater joy than taking care of a couple during early adulthood, then caring for them during their pregnancy, delivering their baby, being their baby’s physician, and then also taking care of their parents and grandparents! Family medicine is the only specialty that allows for this, and I feel so lucky to be a family doctor.
What can you do within the scope of pediatric care?
I can provide primary care services for patients of all ages, which includes wellness visits for preventive care as well as the management of acute and chronic illnesses.
What is your favorite children’s book?
I love all of the books by Nancy Tillman, especially On the Night You Were Born. Her illustrations are captivating and her words are magical (and often bring tears to my eyes when I read them to my kids!).
